setting time of concrete (ACI, 1987). The setting time of fly ash concrete is dependent on the composition and the quantity of fly ash used in mix. Fly ash concrete usually develops greater ultimate strengths than non fly ash concrete. However, for this gain in strength to occur, appropriate curing time is necessary. Whereas cement concrete only requires approximately 28 days curing, fly ash concrete requires a curing time of approximately 90 days in order to develop comparable strengths. This slow gain of strength is generally due to the rather slow pozzolanic reaction of fly ash. 3.4 Recycled aggregates According to the Construction Recycling Materials Association, more than 325 million tons of recoverable construction and demolition (C&D) materials are generated in the United States per year. These construction waste materials are mostly composed of concrete, asphalt, asphalt shingles, gypsum wallboard, wood and metals. Plastics and other products are also present in very small amount. A graphical representation is shown in the following chart. 16
