3.1 Material background CHAPTER THREE – MATERIALS Prior to analyzing the physical structure of each material used in this sustainable composite, the fundamental structure of concrete itself must fully be understood. Traditionally, concrete has been used in material construction for both structural and non- structural applications. It is a composite substance wherein a binding material mixed in water solidifies, and ties with inert particles of well graded fine and coarse aggregates (Singh 1979). The two most common Cementitous materials used in concrete are: Portland cement and fly ash. 3.2 Portland cement Portland cement is an essential and widely used component in the making of cement concrete. As the concrete elements are merged, the calcium silicates (C2S and C3S) in the Portland cement react with water molecules to form calcium silicate hydrate (3CaO · 2SiO2 · 3H2O) and calcium hydroxide (Ca[OH]2). The ensuing chemical equation is as follow: 2C3S + 6H = C3S2H3 + 3CH2C2S + 4H = C3S2H3 + CH Eq.1 9
