CHAPTER TWO – LITERATURE REVIEW In the past, a wide range of experimental investigations have been performed on the overall strength and durability of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC). Special considerations were also attributed to the effect of fly ash (class C and class F) on these mixes. Some of these studies are described below. Theodorou (2008) evaluated the strength and durability of Florida RAC (obtained from Sun Recycling) with high volume class F fly ash and compared its performance with cement RAC with comparable mix designs. The study also encompassed a series of compressive, flexural and split tensile strength tests in order to determine whether or not recycled aggregates can provide the required strength to be used as a conventional construction material. During the analysis, three mix designs were examined: i) Mix with no fly ash ; ii) Mix with 16% fly ash replacement; iii) Mix with 40% fly ash replacement. The study showed that there was a steady strength increase as the volumetric replacement of fly ash in the mixture increased. The study also showed that fly ash specimen which were allowed a 90 day curing period recorded higher strength than those only subjected to a typical 28 day curing period and the non-fly ash specimen. 4PDF Image | HDPE FIBER REINFORCED RECYCLED AGGREGATE CONCRETE
